It may be important to note three travel insurance myths:

• I bought my flight tickets with my credit card, which automatically offered me travel insurance cover. The travel insurance cover offered by banks is very basic and offers limited cover. We have top- up cover available up to the age of 69.

• I am traveling to Botswana in my 4×4, and travel insurance only covers you when you fly abroad. Travel insurance offers comprehensive travel insurance cover whilst travelling in Botswana with your own vehicle. This policy does not cover the vehicle. The vehicle must be insured on your short-term insurance policy.

• I have medical aid which covers me abroad. Once again, the travel insurance cover offered by medical aid funds is basic and offers limited cover. Top Up cover is available to clients up to the age of 69 years.

For illustrative purposes, we are listing the typical cover travel insurance policies offer. The below is an example of one of the comprehensive options for 3 different scenarios:
1. Husband and wife travelling for 15 days to Canada
2. One person doing multiple trips abroad in a year
3. Couple travelling to Botswana for 15 days

Our comprehensive cover is priced very reasonably. For example, the premium for a husband and wife (both in their early sixties) traveling to Canada for 15 days will be only R2 250 per person. This cover is extremely comprehensive and will include among others:
• Emergency medical expenses including terrorism – R100 000 000
• Death and permanent total disability (excluding air travel) -R500 000
• Death and permanent total disability (insurance for air travel only) – R650 000
• Emergency medical expenses when taking part in sports – R2 500 000
• Burial, cremation or return of mortal remains– Actual expenses
• Rejection of visa application – R40 000
• Theft or damage to baggage – R40 000
• Theft of passport and travel documents – R10 000
• Cost of alternative travel due to travel delay – R30 000
• Legal responsibilities to third parties – R5 000 000
• Kidnap and wrongful detention – R500 000

The premium for the same cover, mentioned above, will cost a single person in his early sixties traveling abroad on unlimited multiple trips over a 12-month period only R 10 925.
The premium for a couple in their early sixties traveling to Botswana for a period of 14 days will cost only R2 250 per person.
These premiums are based on actual premiums charged to clients in early 2024. The covers and premiums could change in future.
The premium is based on age, destination, and duration of trip.
